Start With a Spin-Ready Practice Space
Spins require more from a training area than basic skating drills. You need a clean, level surface with enough open space to enter, rotate, and safely check out of the spin. How to Practice Figure Skating Spins With Drills
The best spin sessions combine position work, entries, and short sets of intentional attempts. Rather than trying the same spin 30 times, give each group of repetitions a single job.
Use these four drills as a progression:
T-position pivots: Start in a T-position and make small pivots around the toe pick while keeping the torso tall. This builds awareness of where the rotation begins without the pressure of a full spin.
Backspin preparation: From a stable backward glide, practice pulling the free foot close to the skating ankle without rotating aggressively. The objective is clean foot placement and a strong vertical axis.
Entry edge holds: Set the entry edge for an upright spin and hold it for a count before rotating. This trains patience and prevents the common habit of spinning before the body is balanced.
Centering challenges: Place a small visual marker on the surface. Attempt to complete a two-foot or upright spin while staying near that marker. Review whether the spin traveled forward, backward, or sideways.

Upright spins
The upright spin rewards vertical alignment. Watch for a free hip that swings open, a shoulder that drops, or arms that pull unevenly. A useful cue is to imagine growing tall through the skating side while the free side wraps in smoothly. End by checking out with control rather than stepping out abruptly.
Sit spins
Sit spins demand strength, ankle mobility, and patience. Many skaters sink too quickly, lose their chest position, and end up rotating on the wrong part of the blade. Practice the sit position off the ice first, with the skating knee tracking in line with the toe and the back held long. On the surface, work on shallow dips and gradually lower the position as balance improves.
Camel spins
Camel spins require a long body line, but reaching the free leg high before the axis is stable usually causes the spin to travel. Begin with a modest extension and square hips. A coach may prefer the skater to train camel entries and body position separately at first. That is not slower progress. It is cleaner progress.
Use Video, Not Guesswork
A phone video is one of the most effective tools in spin training. Film from the side for body position and from the front or back for centering. Review one or two attempts, identify a single correction, then return to the drill. Watching every repetition can interrupt the rhythm of the session, while never reviewing video allows the same error to become a habit.
Look for clear signals: Does the head stay over the skating foot? Does the free leg come in under control? Do the shoulders remain level? Does the spin finish where it started? The answer tells you what to train next.

Practice frequency depends on the skater's age, experience, and coaching plan. Beginners may benefit from short sessions two or three times a week.
